I’m writing as one of your constituents and one of two-thirds of Australians who, once they see how far our country has fallen behind in its investment in science and research, want our government to act.

The Australian Academy of Science has brought together clear evidence on why this matters and why action is needed now.

Australia has a strong track record of turning great ideas into real-world benefits. Things like Wi-Fi, life-saving medical treatments, and advances in solar energy all came from Australian research. This won’t continue if we don’t act.

Australia now invests just 1.69% of GDP in research and development, well below the OECD average of 2.7% and we now rank 40th out of 44 OECD nations for the proportion of people graduating in science, technology, engineering and maths.

If we keep going as we are, our classrooms will have fewer maths and science teachers. Bright young Australians will leave to build careers somewhere else. Australia will keep buying from overseas what we should be building ourselves in critical areas like clean energy, medicines, defence and the technologies like AI that will shape the next decades. We will hand to other countries the talent, the jobs and the future that should stay here.

I believe that science done here is science done right and 9 in 10 Australians agree. We value homegrown science.

I’m asking you to publicly support the restoration of Australian science to internationally competitive levels . This is about protecting our economy, our safety, and our quality of life.
